Scheme to relieve hospital pressure

The Health Ministry is working on a plan to ease the pressure on public hospitals by diverting more cases to primary healthcare, Kathimerini has learnt.

According to the the scheme being drawn up, all non-emergency cases would be treated by doctors at health centers and former EOPYY units. They would refer any serious cases to the public hospitals through an electronic system that would book the patients’ appointments.

In 2013, public hospitals received 11.8 million visitors, only 4.7 million of whom were emergency cases. The ministry believes that the number of non-emergency cases which end up at hospitals could be reduced by 70 percent.
