Double quake on Atalanti fault line rattles Greek capital

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude measurement of between 5.3 to 5.5 on the Richter scale at the Atalanti fault line running between mainland Greece and the island of Evia rattled the Greek capital in the early hours of Tuesday.

The epicenter of the tremor, which struck shortly after 1 a.m., was located some 80 kilometers north of Athens and 30 kilometers from the Evia town of Halkida, according to the National Geodynamic Institute. It was followed a few minutes later by a smaller quake whose magnitude has been estimated at 5.1 Richter.

No injuries or damages have been reported.
