Just a day after Independent Greeks MPs agreed

An Athens prosecutor on Wednesday ordered an investigation into claims by the owner of a street kiosk in the central district of Exarchia according to which a group of police officers roughed him up and tried to steal several bottles of water from the kiosk on the night of November 17 when a rally marking the 41st anniversary of a student uprising against the junta turned violent.

The Greek Police (ELAS) has already asked its internal affairs department to probe the claims which the officers in question reject, claiming that they tried to pay for the water but were rebuffed.

In an amateur video of the incident posted on the Internet, officers in riot gear can be seen grappling with a man next to a kiosk.

Separately ELAS has ordered an investigation into claims that four police officers who had been on duty at Santorini Airport on Monday released eight immigrants who had tried to board a flight to Vienna with forged documents.

The officers are alleged to have torn up the migrants’ papers and freed them without charge.
