The troubled project to construct a metro system in Thessaloniki has suffered another setback as the line’s extension to the Kalamaria district of the city is behind schedule.
It was revealed that the 4.7-kilometer stretch to Kalamaria, where five stations will be located, was due to be ready in early 2018 but the that deadline has been extended by eight months to the end of the year. The reason for the delay is that authorities have not yet completed the appropriation of the land through which the metro line will run.
The repeated delays have angered Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzicostas, who said that he is planning on taking legal action before the end of the year.
“Someone has to answer for this unbelievable hole [in the ground], for the damage that has been suffered by business and the ordeal the city has gone through,” he said.
