Independent Greeks vote to oppose coalition’s presidential candidate

A congress held by the anti-austerity Independent Greeks ended on Sunday with all MPs bar one voting in favor of the party not voting for any presidential candidate put forward by the government in March.

“Not one Independent Greeks MP will vote for the president,” said Kammenos after delegates and MPs voted with a show of hands.

“There will be [national] elections by the end of March. Whoever can stand the course will continue with us. Whoever cannot should disembark now.”

Panayiotis Melas was the only one of the party’s 13 lawmakers not to show his support for the party’s position. Melas made his objections known a few days earlier, although he added that he was in two minds over whether he would vote for the coalition’s presidential candidate or not.

Kammenos also underlined that he is open to working with other parties, including SYRIZA, after possible snap elections but would insist on certain criteria for such a cooperation.
