Greek police destroy bomb outside bank following warning call

Greek police on Monday morning destroyed a bomb by controlled explosion outside a bank in northern Athens, following a warning call to a newspaper. There was no damage or injuries.

Police said the site in the suburb of Halandri was evacuated and cordoned off, and the bomb, which had been placed inside a package, was destroyed at 7.30 a.m.

An unidentified man, who called at Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper, said that the act was in solidarity with anarchist and convicted robber Nikos Romanos, police said.

A Supreme Court prosecutor on Tuesday rejected an appeal by Romanos for a court ruling rejecting his appeal for study furlough from prison to be revoked. Romanos threatened to compound his hunger strike, now in its 30th day, with a refusal to drink water.
