Ministry rebuffs reports that Amphipolis skeleton has been identified

The Greek Culture Ministry on Friday denied press reports according to which the human remains discovered in an excavation at the site of Ancient Amphipolis in northern Greece have been identified, referring to «groundless 'information' and speculation."

In its statement, the ministry reiterates that an examination of the bones found in the tomb is underway and that the sex, age and height of the deceased is expected to be revealed «within the month of January."

The results of a broader investigation aimed at determining the identity of the skeleton are expected within 20 months from now, the ministry said.

The ongoing excavation at Amphipolis has attracted widespread media interest as the tomb dates to around the era of the ancient warrior Alexander the Great.
