Cold snap set to bring storms and snowfall

A cold snap that took hold over the weekend is to continue this week with storms expected in many parts and snowfall in the north and mountainous parts of the mainland.

Following several months of relatively mild weather, snow and sub-zero temperatures appeared across much of the north over the weekend, starting in Thessaloniki and spreading to central and western Macedonia.

Motorists in Florina, Edessa, Kastoria and Kozani as well as other cities in the north were advised to fit their vehicles with anti-skid chains amid warnings that country roads were perilous.

Weather forecasts suggested that conditions will continue to deteriorate this week across much of the country, with snowfall expected in many parts on New Year’s Eve, including Attica.

Conditions are set to change at sea too, with predictions of winds reaching gale force. “The key characteristics of the weather on Tuesday and Wednesday are intense northerly winds in the Aegean which will reach 7 to 8, maybe 9 Beaufort,” Panayiotis Yiannopoulos of the National Meteorological Service (EMY) told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. He added that temperatures would plunge below the seasonal norm, following an unusually temperate few months, with freezing conditions in the north and parts of central Greece.
