Man killed, woman critical after car explosion on Athens highway

A male motorist was killed and his female passenger was seriously injured after the car in which they were traveling exploded on the Attiki Odos highway in Athens on Monday morning, with police suggesting the blast was caused by an explosive device.

Bomb experts investigating the scene of the blast, which occurred at 7.30 a.m. on the airport-bound lane near Spata, northeast of the Greek capital, say that an explosive device is believed to have been placed on the road after a search of the vehicle did not reveal any traces of a bomb.

The car was traveling when the device went off, killing the driver and seriously injuring his passenger, both Albanian nationals. The woman is in critical condition.

The driver has been identified and is known to have worked as a bouncer at a bar. He was on his way to the airport to catch a flight to Tirana.
