Election budget is tightened again

A budget of 45 million euros has been approved for the general elections on January 25 – which is 10 percent less than for the May 2012 polls – following tough negotiations between the Interior Ministry and the Finance Ministry, Kathimerini understands.

The Interior Ministry, which is organizing the elections, asked for 50 million euros but the Finance Ministry insisted that spending be kept to a minimum, signing off on 5 million euros less. The budget must also cover the wages of police who will be working on election day.

Last week the union of municipal employees, POE-OTA, called a strike for the week leading up to the January 25 polls to protest that staff with debts to the state have not been paid bonuses for working during the European Parliament elections last May.
