Afghan interpreters of Greek military to be granted visas

The government this week launched proceedings for the issuing of visas to Afghan interpreters who worked with a Greek military unit participating in a NATO-led operation in Afghanistan.

The Defense Ministry said the details of the interpreters, and of their relatives in Afghanistan, have been forwarded to the Foreign Ministry to allow visas to be issued and that any additional necessary action would be taken to enable them to enter and reside in Greece legally.

The move followed a report in Kathimerini last October about the problems and threats faced by five Afghan interpreters who worked with the Greek military unit between 2010 and the summer of 2012 when the Greek team left Kabul.
