US President Barack Obama has congratulated newly-elected Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on his recent election victory.

News of a phone conversation between the two leaders late on Wednesday surfaced on the Greek premier’s Twitter account, while a press statement released by the White House noted that President Obama told Tsipras that the United States, “as a longstanding friend and ally, looks forward to working closely with the new Greek government to help Greecec return to a path of long-term prosperity.”

The two men also discussed close cooperation on issues of European security and counter-terrorism, the statement said.
