It is expected that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will name his party’s candidate for president this weekend.

The process of electing a successor to incumbent Karolos Papoulias has been delayed due to talks between government officials and their eurozone counterparts.

If Tsipras nominates someone this weekend, it is thought that the first round of voting in Parliament, when the candidate will need to gain 180 of 300 seats, will be on Friday.

European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos is the favorite for the role.

Other names that have been linked to the post are former Education Minister Marietta Giannakou and ex-Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, who are both also from New Democracy.
