Warden of maximum-security prison gunned down outside his home

The warden of maximum-security Domokos Prison in central Greece, a facility recently reinforced to house some of Greece's most dangerous criminals, was gunned down outside his home on Saturday afternoon in what police are treating as a professional execution.

The 47-year-old father of two was leaving his home near the town of Lamia on Saturday afternoon when a dark SUV pulled up beside him and two or three men allegedly opened fire with Kalashnikov assault rifles and a 9mm pistol. Police said he was shot over 20 times and dozens of spent bullets were found near his body.

Alarmed by the gunshots, his mother reportedly alerted the authorities after finding her son's body. The assailants had already sped off.

Reports suggested that the investigation is being carried out with the help of the Greek Police's counter-terrorism unit as Domokos Prison is where convicted terrorists Christodoulos Xeros and Nikos Maziotis are currently being held.

A large-scale manhunt has been launched for the perpetrators.

Newly appointed Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos condemned the killing as "cowardly and heinous," offering his condolences to the victim's family.
