A First Instance Court prosecutor on Friday ordered an investigation into claims of abuse of detainees at the immigrant detention center in Amygdaleza, northwest of Athens.

The prosecutor, Ilias Zagoraios, ordered the probe following upheaval at the facility earlier this month. The rioting broke out after a migrant took his own life inside the compound. It prompted Alternate Minister for Citizens Protection Yiannis Panousis to visit the center and express shame at the conditions there.

Authorities this week started releasing migrants from detention centers across the country, including 110 from the Amygdaleza unit.

Immigrants who have left the facilities have all provided authorities with a home address and have been instructed to report to their local police stations regularly, according to officials who said no migrants facing crime charges will be freed.
