Police and counter-terrorism officers have been focusing their search for escaped convict Vassilis Paleocostas in and around Ioannina in northwestern Greece, the Greek Police said on Saturday.

The 49-year-old serial armed robber has been at large since 2009, when he escaped from the Greek capital’s Korydallos Prison by helicopter, for the second time. Police said they have received reliable tips that Paleocostas may be hiding in the area but added that an ongoing search for a student who has been missing from Ioannina for over a month may have forced him to flee to a different part of the country.

Investigators are also eager to establish whether there is any connection between the escaped convict and the assassination of a prison warden in central Greece. The 47-year-old warden of Domokos Prison, who had previously served at Korydallos, was gunned down outside his house on February 21.
