Eight illegal migrants were arrested by Greek police and Frontex officers in the northeastern Evros prefecture, it was announced on Tuesday.
An alleged migrant smuggler, who was also arrested, used an inflatable dinghy to transport them to the Greek side of Evros River after picking them up at the Turkish side of the frontier.

The illegal migrants told authorities that they had paid 1,000 euros each to a human trafficking ring active in Turkey and Greece and that their destination was Athens.

In a separate incident, another five illegal migrants were arrested at Mesti intersection on the Egnatia national motorway after the private car they were riding in was stopped by police following a chase. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot.
