European Maritime Day was observed in parliament on Friday with speeches delivered by members of the government and political party MPs. Parliament President Filippos Petsalnikos referred to the importance of a common European maritime policy and strategy on shipping, sea environment protection and illegal migration, stressing that a common European strategy is necessary to deal with the increased number of migrants seeking to cross Europe’s external borders.
May 20 is the day chosen by the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Europe (CoE) to showcase the importance of the sea and oceans in everyday life.
