The two-man crew of a Mirage 2000 jet fighter were forced to bail out of the aircraft at 13.24 on Thursday, while flying above the sea between the island of Samos and the islets Fournoi in the Aegean. Both men successfully abandoned the plane using their ejection seats after its engine lost thrust.
Flight lieutenant Michail Kourtis and Deputy Flight Lieutenant Michail Mitsios were later collected by an Army vessel sailing nearby and were both reported in good health.
The Airforce General Staff said that the Mirage 2000 jet, along with three other aircraft of the same type, had taken off from the 114 Battle Wing in Tanagra on a training mission. A team of experts is currently investigating the cause of the accident.
