The Athens first-instance court has adjourned a hearing on whether to declare the strike by Public Power Corporation staff illegal until this Monday. Until that time, it has issued a temporary order that calls on PPC workers to maintain the power supply to consumers at the same levels as on Thursday night. PPC trade unionists must therefore bring three power production units in Amyntaios, Ptolemaida and Attica back on line. The three power plants were shut down after talks between the GENOP trade union and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos broke down.
Trade unionists object to plans to privatise the PPC as part of a government drive to increase state revenues and pay down debt.
