The final curtain fell on Friday on the 'Manolis Kalomiris Festival', held annually over the last 15 years at Pythagorio on the northeastern Aegean island of Samos.
The news of its discontinuation came as the Festival was being awarded by the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation in Munich.
The festival was dedicated to the promotion of the work of music composer Manolis Kalomiris, feature music and theatre performances by distinguished Greek artists.
The Festival's artistic director Sotiris Margioris, in an announcement, said that the Festival, «in its long course, put its seal on the country's cultural life, and the events of which were attended by thousands of local and foreign visitors to the island", while in the last two years charter flights from Germany and England were arriving on the island bringing visitors for the purpose of attending the events.
Efforts have been made by local MP Pythagoras Vardikos and Samos mayor Stelios Thanos to ministries and the regional authorities seeking funding for the Festival, but without a positive response.
