The Thessaloniki International Film Festival Organisation has strongly condemned the sentencing of Iranian film directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof and called for their immediate release.

A statement issued on Thursday underlined that their arrest “is unacceptable and an embarrassment to humanity, constituting blatant violation of fundamental human rights”, stressing that “no effort will be spared to overturn this development”.

Panahi received a six-year prison term and is not allowed to make any films for the next 20 years after being accused of "inciting opposition protests" and making a film without official government approval.

The same prison sentence was imposed on Muhammad Rasoulof.
