An unprecedented case involving numerous break-ins was brought to light by local police in the central city of Larissa following the arrest of no less than 58 individuals, three of which are accused of forming a criminal ring, authorities announced on Thursday.

The suspects were allegedly behind break-ins in Larissa and Trikala, from 2005 until September 2010 when two people were initially arrested, leading to a major police investigation.

A woman, identified as the owner of a pawnshop, is suspected of being the mastermind of the ring, which specialised in stealing jewelry. The woman is suspected of fencing the stolen jewellery both within Greece and abroad. A safe-deposit box under her name was located in the United Kingdom, amongst others.

Authorities found in her possession and seized a total of 2,331 objects, mainly jewellery. Only 227 of them were identified by the 106 robbery victims.

According to police, many of the stolen goods had been fenced while others had been melted for gold.
