A policeman arrested following the tragic accident in Menidi on Wednesday when he ran over and fatally injured a seven-year-old girl with his motorcycle has been released by order of a prosecutor.

The prosecutor, before whom the policeman was led late in the afternoon, ordered the holding of a preliminary investigation to ascertain the exact conditions of the tragic event and then charges to be filed for the offences of manslaughter and causing bodily injury through negligence.

Until the investigation is concluded, the policeman will remain free by order of the prosecutor.

Calm returns to Menidi after girl's fatal injury

Calm has returned to Athens’ Menidi district on Wednesday afternoon following a brief riot that erupted in response to the death of a seven-year-old gypsy girl accidentally run over by a police motorcycle officer.

Roughly 100 gypsies had set garbage dumpsters ablaze and blocked a nearby railway line. Protesters subsequently returned to their settlement although police forces remained in the area.
