Police in the northern city of Thessaloniki have arrested three municipal employees in connection with the attack on a German envoy, according to a Skai report.

Protesters on Thursday stormed a building where Greek and German officials were meeting and pelted German Consul Wolfgang Hoelscher-Obermaier with coffee cups and water bottles.

Riot police used teargas and truncheons to break up a crowd of 250 city employees outside the building and formed a shield around the diplomat as he entered.

Protesters were allegedly irked at earlier comments by German envoy Hans-Joachim Fuchtel, who on Wednesday told journalists that 1,000 German municipal workers can do the work of 3,000 of their Greek counterparts.

A Thessaloniki prosecutor has asked for an investigation into the events, Skai said.
