Deputy Health Minister Marios Salmas has proposed an unusual solution to cancer patients who are not able to find the medicines they need: He invited them to call his office and notify him personally.

Speaking to Skai TV on Saturday, Salmas rejected claims that cancer sufferers were among numerous patients who are finding it difficult to get hold of drugs because of cutbacks and pharmaceutical companies exporting the medicines abroad, where they can fetch a higher price. He gave out his office number (213.214.2886) for anyone who has difficulties to call.

“There is no difficulty for cancer sufferers to find medicines,” said Salmas, despite pharmacists claiming there are shortages of up to 100 drugs.

The minister added that drugs were about 14 percent cheaper as a result of the changes in the prescription process made this year.
