Nikos Dertilis, the only surviving member of the 1967-74 military dictatorship’s hierarchy, turned down permission to attend the funeral of his son, Vassilis Dertilis, on Saturday.

The permission was granted by Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis who said that, in an exception to prison regulations, the former general would be allowed to attend the funeral service without handcuffs. It was not known why he rejected the offer.

In jail for the past 37 years, Dertilis was convicted for life for the murder of 20-year-old student Michalis Myroyiannis during the Athens Polytechnic uprising in November 1973.
