The government is set to extend by a week the deadline for motorists to pay for their 2013 road tax, a top official said on Monday.

Speaking on Skai TV in the morning, the general secretary for Information Systems (GSIS), Haris Theocharis, said that an official announcement was due later in the day.

The original deadline was due to expire at the end of the day.

Long queues had formed at banks over the past few days as car owners sought to pay their road tax.

This is the first year that motorists were able to print their road tax details online rather than wait for notifications to arrive by post.

Theocharis said it was not clear if the deadline for vehicle owners who wanted to hand in their license plates in order to avoid paying road tax would also be extended.
