Hunger-striking anarchist Costas Sakkas who is being accused of belonging to an urban guerilla group can be released on bail following a ruling by an Athens court on Thursday.
The 29-year-old has been on hunger strike since June 4 to protest the fact that he has been held in detention for two-and-a-half years, when the maximum the Greek law allows for pretrial custody is 18 months.
Sakkas was arrested in December 2010 but two months before his custody was due to end, he was charged for a different offense and remanded for that.
He is being accused of membership to Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, charges that he has consistently denied.
The court said Sakkas could be released on a bail of 30,000 euros. Under the terms of his release, Sakkas may not leave the prefecture of Attica and must check in regularly at a local police station.
On Wednesday, a doctor monitoring Sakkas’s health said the man was at the “final stage” of life and appealed to the government to secure his release.
