Greece has described an article in Turkish daily Zaman suggesting Athens is releasing terrorists to Syria, where they are being trained by Bashar al-Assad’s regime and could pose a threat to Turkey and US interests there, as “beyond the bounds of bizarre and inexplicable conspiracy theory.”

“One wonders… what goals… are served by the publication of articles with such content just one week after Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos’s successful visit to Ankara,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Constantinos Koutras.

The Zaman article refers to a “confidential report shared by government sources” that alleges leftist terrorists are being trained in Lavrio, southeast of Athens, and that Ecevit Sanli, who carried out a deadly suicide bombing at the US Embassy in Ankara in February, traveled to Turkey from Greece.

Greek diplomatic sources attributed the article to Turkish pressure on Athens to extradite Kurds that live in Greece.
