A lack of interest in mediation services, which have been available at some Greek courts for the last year, means cases are continuing to pile up in their thousands.

A lack of interest in mediation services, which have been available at some Greek courts for the last year, means cases are continuing to pile up in their thousands.

Judges at the First Instance Court in Athens, Greece’s busiest court, have since last year had the ability to act as mediators between the plaintiff and defendant but only 60 people have so far used the service. The option has been available at the Appeals Court since April but has not yet been taken up by anyone. The option of out-of-court mediation is also beginning to be made available.

The First Instance Court received 584,000 cases in the last year. It has just 380 judges.
