Police are looking for clues that may help them determine the identity of some 50 self-styled anarchists who stormed the courtyard of a building where the regional governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kachrimanis, was celebrating his name day late on Friday with close friends and members of his family.

Using sticks and stones, the unknown assailants damaged a number of vehicles parked in the vicinity before dispersing to avoid being arrested by police officers who were called to the scene.

The incident is believed to have been an act of retaliation against the police’s recent raids on squats by extreme leftists groups in a number of state-owned buildings in the northwestern city of Ioannina.
