Six Greek universities make world’s top 800 but leaders drop in rankings

Six Greek universities have been ranked among the world’s best 800 tertiary institutions, as rated by QS in its annual World Universities rankings.

The top-ranked Greek college was Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, which was placed between places 471 and 480. Crete University, ranked between 491 and 500, came next. Despite leading the way, both universities dropped down the rankings compared to the 2012/13 table.

Crete was followed by Athens University, which QS placed between 501 and 550. The National Technical University of Athens was also rated in the same group. Patras University was ranked from 601 to 650 and Athens University of Economics and Business was placed from 701st onwards.

MIT came top of the QS World University Rankings for the second year running, while Harvard displaced Britain’s Cambridge University to take second spot in the 2013 table.

US institutions made up six of the top 10, with the remaining four places being filled by British universities.

The QS rankings included a record number of UK institutions in the top 20, with Edinburgh and King’s College London making their first appearances.

According to the study, graduates from Oxford and Cambridge were the most employable in the world.

The rankings take into account the subject range, research results and academic reputation offered by 3,000 institutions internationally.
