Tanks and armored vehicles are to join members of the armed forces in this year’s October 28 parade, commemorating Greece’s defiance of Axis powers at the start of World War II, three years after they were withdrawn as a cost-cutting measure.

Tanks will be on display this year, as well as military aircraft, after Defense Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos accepted a proposal by Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) General Michalis Kostarakos for aerial formations to accompany a parade on the ground.

The traditional partipation of tanks and other armored vehicles in the October 28 or “Ochi Day” parade, as well as the show of force by Greek military aircraft, was suspended in 2010 after Greece signed its first rescue deal with international creditors to save money. From 3.1 million euros, the cost of the annual parade had dropped to 350,000 euros. No details were released about the cost of this year’s parade.
