A fresh round of Cyprus peace talks should not turn into another “dialogue for the sake of dialogue,” Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said on Monday.

A fresh round of Cyprus peace talks should not turn into another “dialogue for the sake of dialogue,” Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said on Monday.

The renewal of discussions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots would not lead to tangible results given discord over the “basic principles” regarding the island’s reunification, said Anastasiades, who reiterated his call for a “new impetus” in the upcoming negotiations.

The island nation has been divided since 1974, when Turkish armed forces invaded the north, following a coup by Greek-Cypriot supporters of union with Greece.
