Committee imposes 800,000 euros in fines for pre-election violations in 2010

Greece’s committee for inspections for election spending on Friday imposed a total of 800,000 euros in fines for violations ahead of local authority elections in 2010.

The fines relate to 87 parties of varying sizes which were found to have either exceeded the legal ceiling for pre-election spending, to have been unable to justify the source of their spending or to have failed to declare their expenses electronically as required by law.

The most prominent name in the list was that of the current Health Minister Adonis Georgidis who ran as a candidate for regional governor of Attica with the movement Attiki Odos in the 2010 elections. Georgiadis was fined 12,903 euros.

Among other politicians on the list of those penalized are the current general secretary for Attica’s decentralized administration, Dimitris Kalogeropoulos, who was fined 24,550 euros, the current mayor of Vyronas Nikos Hardalias, who was fined 63,423 euros, and Yiannis Dimaras, who head the Citizens’ Chariot party and was fined 50,000 euros.
