A magistrate has summoned former PASOK deputy and minister Michalis Karchimakis to testify in connection with wiretapping cases and with an alleged 2008 plot to overthrow or even kill the then-conservative prime minister, Costas Karamanlis, press reports said on Friday.

According to sources, the magistrate, Dimitris Foukas, summoned Karchimakis after a search on the latter’s home turned up confidential documents of the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Armed Forces.

His summons relates to one aspect of the case and the charge he faces is that of moral instigation to violating confidential information, the sources said.

The main suspect, according to the same sources, is an employee of EYP who has already testified in connection with the case and has been released on conditional terms. The employee is alleged to have denied supplying Karchimakis with confidential documents.

The probe into the affair has been linked to the case file relating to claims regarding an alleged plot to thwart efforts by Karamanlis to improve energy relations with Russia and included overthrowing and even killing the premier.

Charges were brought against unknown suspects in March 2012 following press reports about a Russian document revealing the plot and came after testimony from Greek secret service agents, police and Karamanlis’ security guards.

Judicial officials allegedly have a significant testimony relating to that case.
