SYRIZA will hold a media event on Monday afternoon to launch its campaign for May’s local elections.

The news conference comes after the leftist party announced that its MP Theodoros Dritsas will be standing for mayor of Piraeus. SYRIZA’s other two key candidates, Athens mayorship hopeful Gavriil Sakelaridis and would-be Attica governor Rena Dourou, will also present their plans on Monday.

Current Attica Governor, Yiannis Sgouros, indicated on Monday that he would stand in May’s elections. Sgourous told Skai radio that he would make an announcement in the next few days on whether he intends to stand for reelection.

Meanwhile, opinion polls published over the weekend indicated that Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis has a lead over his rivals, including New Democracy candidate Aris Spiliotopoulos and fellow conservative Nikitas Kaklamanis, who intends to run as a an independent.
