A civil mobilization order issued in January 2013 to force public transport workers to return to their jobs in Athens after weeks of strikes has been rescinded.

The decision, signed by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, was published in the Government Gazette this week and means that workers on the Athens metro, the Kifissia-Piraeus electric railway (ISAP) and the metro can engage in protest action in the future without facing the threat of being fined or sent to jail.

The move comes as unions representing the transportation workers are busy with collective contract negotiations with STASY, the company that manages fixed-track forms of public transport in Athens.
