The father of hunger striker Nikos Romanos is due to meet Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

Romanos, 21, is entering the 28th day of his hunger strike, demanding prison furloughs so he can study at Athens Technical College. A court recently rejected his application.

The government is to submit to Parliament legislation that allows prisoners to study from prison via distance learning. However, Romanos has rejected this option and believes it could also prevent other inmates from obtaining leave.

His parents asked for a meeting with Samaras over the weekend through their son’s lawyer, Fragiskos Ragoussis. Romanos, a convicted bank robber, issued a brief statement saying he was against the meeting taking place.

It was revealed on Monday that only Romanos’s father, Giorgos, would take part in the meeting.

Ragousis said that the 21-year old is “completely exhausted and cannot get up from his bed.” He has threatened to stop drinking liquids from Tuesday.
