Remnants of an Ottoman-era bath house, dated to the 16th century, was discovered in the centre of Trikala, central Greece, this week during restoration works at an old prison's main building.
Archaeologists believe the site is the one referred to by several 17th and 18th century travellers in their writings.
The serendipitous discovery was made during restoration works, so the building can again be used by the municipality.
