Greek prime minister George Papandreou had sideline meetings with German chancellor Angela Merkel, Belgian prime minister Yves Leterme, Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Zapatero and European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso in Paris on Thursday on the sidelines of an international «Friends of Libya" conference hosted by France. Papandreou discussed with the officials the progress made regarding the EU July 21 summit decisions on Greece.
In a meeting with EU High Representative for foreign affairs and security policy Baroness Catherine Ashton, the discussion focused mainly on developments in the Middle East.
Papandreou further met with Arab League secretary general Nabil el-Araby and the emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. With the Emir, Papandreou discussed the recent merger agreement between Athens listed Eurobank and Alpha Bank with investment capital from Qatar, as well as cooperation in other sectors as well, such as the reconstruction of Libya.
