Fuel smuggling totals 400-500 million euro annually, the federation of Oil Products Trading Enterprises (SEEPE) said on Friday, saying that a government plan to equalize taxes on diesel heating oil was a correct fiscal measure but inadequate to combat fuel smuggling in the domestic market.

A SEEPE announcement said the measure, scheduled to be implemented in October 2012, was the most efficient way to combating smuggling in heating oil, but noted that the state must take urgent and fair action to support lower incomes in order to avoid worsening further their existing difficult living conditions. The Federation recommended a series of measures aimed at combating smuggling in the oil products sector, such as more intense inspections, implementing a system of controlling fuel inflow-outflow in petrol stations, upgrading custom procedures and combating smuggling in fuel products.
