Athens Mayor George Kaminis on Thursday announced an upcoming pilot scheme to rent public bicycles in the historic centre of Athens, with depots on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, at Thissio and the Athens Cathedral. He made the announcement at an event to mark the 20th Cycling Run of Athens that will take place on October 16.
Acknowledging that Athens was "perhaps the least cycling-friendly European capital" due to decades of policies that had gradually pushed bicycles out, Kaminis said a spontaneous citizens' movement had grown up in recent years that was growing stronger and demanding that the rights of cyclists in the city be protected.
