Three jailed defendants in a high-profile urban terrorism case were released on Thursday, days before a maximum 18-month pre-trial incarceration period expired.

Defendants Nikos Maziotis, Panayiota Roupa and Costas Gournas were freed a day after their trial began on Wednesday on a variety of felony counts, related to their alleged involvement in the notorious ultra-leftist group "Revolutionary Struggle".

Amongst others, the trio unveiled a declaration on Wednesday stating that they were "proud of the organisation's actions and unrepentant of their role in it.

The ruling to release the three pending trial was issued by council of appellate judges.

Conditions include a ban on travelling abroad or residing outside Attica prefecture, residing at a permanent and listed address and appearing at a local police precinct every five days.
