A freighter carrying contraband cigarettes sank late Thursday in the sea region between Spetses island and the Peloponnese in the Argolic Gulf. The Comoros-flagged ship "MORELIA" was spotted early Thursday by a coast guard patrol vessel near Spetses.
A chase followed and the smuggling ship sent out an SOS, and the 7-member crew -- six Ukrainians and a Georgian national -- requested assistance, reporting a heavy inflow of water in the engine room.

Despite the efforts to salvage the vessel throughout the day, it finally sank to a depth of 400 meters late Thursday due to water inflow.
