Tensions rose at the Athens University on Thursday morning when a group of students hijacked a senate meeting presided by the university’s rector Theodoros Fortsakis.
Early reports suggested that shortly after 9 p.m. a group of about 40 students entered the hall where the meeting was taking place and allegedly prevented Fortsakis and other senate members from leaving the premises. The students were reportedly demanding that all student union parties be represented in the senate meeting to which Fortsakis had invited representatives to present their demands with regard to several issues including campus security and the expulsion of the so-called eternal students.
Fortsakis and other senate members reportedly exited the hall after about an hour.
A row between Fortsakis and students and administrative staff broke out following the rector’s decision to block anyone apart from students, academics, administrative staff and invited guests from entering the institution.
