Two villages in the northwest prefectures of Kozani and Florina will be relocated within the next eight years in response to a standing demand by local residents, who complain of a drastic downgrading of their immediate environment and quality of life as a result of state-run Public Power Corp. SA (PPC) lignite mines operating in the region.

The relocation plan for the villages of Akrini (Kozani) and Agii Anargyri (Florina) will be included in a provision incorporated into adraft law on biodiversity, sponsored by the ministry of environment, energy and climate change -- to be tabled in Parliament shortly.

PPC and the state will share the relocation costs.
