There were no Greek or Cypriot crew members on board the ship "MV Eagle" that was captured by Somali pirates south of Oman, Cypriot authorities said on Tuesday.

The entire crew on board the Cypriot-flagged vessel, which is owned by a Greek shipping company, were Filipinos. The Cyprus government has now begun the process of officially informing the Philippines on the incident.

Cyprus official position and the normal practice in such cases is to not pay a ransom in order to avoid encouraging pirates to take over ships.

According to information given to Cyprus authorities, the captured ship is now heading toward the Somali coast and its progress is being monitored until its final destination.
