Despite the lack of contribution on the part of the Turkish side for a comprehensive, just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem that will be based on UN Security Council decisions and will abide by the EU principles and values, and despite Turkey's insistence to impose a new fait accompli, Greece continues to believe in the need and the potential of reaching a mutually accepted, just and viable settlement within the framework of the ongoing negotiating effort that started and is going on as a result of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias' initiatives and constructive proposals, President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias said on Friday.
Despite the lack of contribution on the part of the Turkish side for a comprehensive, just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem that will be based on UN Security Council decisions and will abide by the EU principles and values, and despite Turkey's insistence to impose a new fait accompli, Greece continues to believe in the need and the potential of reaching a mutually accepted, just and viable settlement within the framework of the ongoing negotiating effort that started and is going on as a result of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias' initiatives and constructive proposals, President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias said on Friday. In a letter to Christofias, on the occasion the 51st anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus independence (October 1st), Papoulias also noted that Greece will spare no effort and determination to achieve a settlement of the Cyprus problem. He added that Greece will continue to do its outmost and continue to support the Republic of Cyprus.

President Papoulias wished on behalf of the people of Greece and himself freedom and welfare to the people of Cyprus. He noted that Greece's olicy on the Cyprus question has been based on the respect of the ypriot sovereignty, the continuous cooperation and the full coordination with the Cyprus government.

He added that the Cyprus government continues to remain a top priority for Greece, adding that "our common strategic goal is the termination of the Turkish occupation and the reunification of the island, in the framework of a comprehensive and viable settlement that will be based on UN Security Council decisions and will abide by the EU principles and values."
